Ten minutes early, that's the whole ask.

212 Demo Row is easy to find and easier to park at. Show up ten minutes before your first class, tell the coach it's your first, and everything after that is handled.

What to expect your first class

You will not be thrown into live rolling with strangers on day one. The coach pairs you with someone patient, slows the pace to match, and nobody in the room expects a first-timer to keep up.

Gi or no-gi?

Either is a fine first class. If you don't own a gi, we'll set you up in a loaner, no need to buy anything before you know you like it. No-gi just means grappling shorts and a rash guard instead; we'll lend you a rash guard too if you show up without one.

What to wear

  • Grappling shorts (no pockets, no zippers, no metal) or a gi if you have one
  • A rash guard or fitted t-shirt (loaners available if you don't)
  • Bare feet on the mats. Shoes come off at the edge, same as everyone else's

Fingernails and toenails trimmed short is the one house rule nobody skips.

The academy · 4,000 square feet

A clean mat, nothing else

4,000 square feet of matted floor, a changing room, and a rack of loaner gis by the door. No cardio machines, no merch wall. The mats get mopped between every session and the gis in the loaner rack are washed after each use. That's where the money goes instead.

The academy · Who's on the mat

Two coaches, every class

The same two people run every block on the grid. No franchise, no rotating cast of instructors you never met. When you show up for a first class, one of them is the one who greets you.

Grant Okafor

Owner · head instructor · black belt

19 years on the mat

Started jiu-jitsu at nineteen in a strip-mall academy that no longer exists, and has been on the mats ever since. Runs the morning classes and the Saturday fundamentals session, and still gets tapped by his own students most weeks, which he considers the job working correctly.

On the floor: weekday mornings, the evening all-levels and no-gi classes, Saturday fundamentals.

Priya Callahan

Coach · fundamentals, kids, women’s class · brown belt

10 years on the mat

Started as a white belt who almost quit after her second class and is glad she didn’t. Runs the fundamentals track that most new students go through and built the kids program from a folder of notes into a real curriculum.

On the floor: weekday evening fundamentals, the kids program, the Tuesday women’s class.
